JULIA ROBILLARD

"My passion is working with people to help them achieve their goals."

You're not only an owner of Robillard Hearing Centres, but you're a hearing instrument specialist as well. What is the most important aspect of your work?
Communication is the most important aspect of my personal and professional life. Hearing my family, hearing nature around me, hearing my clients hearing helps me listen, understand, help, enjoy and learn from every moment of every day.

The company has been around for three generations and has really grown. What's been the biggest obstacle?
After four years of growth, with new offices and new staff, we realized that not all our teams were moving in the same direction or communicating with each other. We organized a two-day retreat in Montebello, where everyone came together. Many were meeting for the first time. We worked on a revised mission statement, realigned with our family values and company goals and became one team under one brand.

You're also Vice-President of Marketing, official spokesperson and a mother of three teenagers. How do you do it all?
Oh, my goodness, you must take time to smell the roses! I mean, literally (laughs). I love spending time in the garden, going for drives, hanging out with my children, laughing with my family, practicing yoga and being outdoors. I'm originally from Ridgetown, Ontario, but I love Ottawa and seeing it with the eyes of a tourist. Being thankful for these moments allows me to be focused, energetic and passionate about work.

After 15 years in the industry, what are your rules for success?
There are a few things. Keeping current in technical training is key. It's empowering to be up to date on the newest technologies and trends. You must listen to your clients, staff, colleagues and industry leaders. To collaborate well, you must keep an open mind. Most of all, go for it! Calculated risks are always a personal and business learning opportunity.

Your company opened a custom ear mold lab in Ottawa two years ago. What does that entail?
It's very exciting! We now manufacture custom ear protection for the military, industry, hunters and musicians, right here in Ottawa! This has been an exciting lateral marketing approach, where we can now help preserve our community's hearing. Preventing hearing loss is just as important to us as addressing hearing loss. I believe this was a component of our business that was missing in the past. Our company now provides complete hearing health care solutions.
