DARPAN AHLUWALIA

"Live your best life, your best health."

You are in the nutrition business, with a focus on natural health at your store, the Manotick Natural Market, near Ottawa. But how would you describe what you do?
My passion is helping people get to a better self with their nutrition, health, mind and body. I love to find the root cause of their health issues when no one else in their lives can pinpoint the problem. My major tool is live blood analysis, which is the use of a high-resolution dark field microscope to observe live blood cells. The analysis gives me information about the immune system, dietary issues, pH balance and a range of other markers. I love a good puzzle when it comes to helping clients. Plus, being a philanthropist, I get to meet so many people and help with so many causes.

What is your mantra when it comes to doing what you do?
Understanding your health is all about understanding how your body can absorb nutrients. The key is not what you eat, but what you are able to absorb. You can eat the best food in the world but if you are not able to assimilate it and break it down, it's not doing much good for your body.

Is this scalable? Where do you see your business going?
Part of my business is called Total Nutrition Diva™ on Call. I launched it globally, so I can help anyone, anywhere, with my knowledge in nutrition, health, herbs, supplements and menu planning for a range of issues — from weight loss to inflammation. I want to be bringing my message to clients on an international scale.

You've had some major setbacks in business when your bakery and clinic burned several years ago. How did you get back on your feet?
Yes, that whole period of my life really made me doubt what I was doing and if I could keep doing it. I went into a bit of a depression, to be honest. But I was able to cope with the love of my family, especially my three kids. I had a lot of support from friends, as well. In the end, it taught me to be resilient and get back on my feet to do what I have loved always doing.

What do you see as your differentiators?
Personal touch, empathy and listening. I really tune in, in two different ways. I listen intently to what a client is saying and what their body is saying. There's always a certain amount of interpretation, so I tune into what my knowledge and experience say, as well. It's a very holistic approach.
